Darjeeling District is the northernmost district of the state of West Bengal in eastern India in the foothills of the Himalayas. The district is famous for its hill station and Darjeeling tea. Darjeeling is the district headquarters. Kurseong, Siliguri and Mirik, three major towns in the district, are the subdivisional headquarters of the district. Kalimpong was one of the subdivisions but on 14 February 2017, it officially became a separate Kalimpong district. Darjeeling is one of the most scenic and hugely popular hill resorts in India.

Best Time To Visit

While summer months from April to June are the best time to visit Darjeeling, some travellers also prefer to visit the beautiful town to enjoy the icy-cool winter months from October to December.

October is when the monsoon ends and slight chill sets in. Winter season begins in full swing from mid-November and stretches right up to January when the winter is at its peak. Snowfall is rarely seen in Darjeeling. But sometimes, the temperature can drop down to -2 degree Celsius, so make sure you pack some woollens on your Darjeeling holiday in the winters.

Weather & Climate

Darjeeling offers moderate temperatures to tourists. Each season has its own contribution to make to the weather. While March to May and September to November are the best times to visit the town, the rest of the year has its own rewards for the adventurous at heart. Throughout the day, the temperature is likely to hover around 16°c (degrees celsius). The wind will blow at the speed of 3, and with the gust of 2.4, it will blow at 148 degrees. The sun will rise at around 04:57 AM in the morning, and around 06:28 PM, it will set in the evening.

How To Reach

Bagdogra, 90 K.M. (via NH 110) away from Darjeeling, is the nearest airport connected by flights from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. Apart from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station (88 K.M. from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) the two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. These railway stations have direct railway connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and other major cities of India. The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, 77 K.M. (via NH 55), which is connected to all the major cities of India. Bus service is available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand, Siliguri. Smaller vehicles are also available on seat-sharing/ hire from airport, railway station, motor syndicates / police motor stand. Facility of Pre-paid taxi stand from NJP Railway station & Bagdogra airport can also be availed. The four routes that one can opt from Siliguri to reach Darjeeling are:
